Croatia Digital Nomad Visa: Tax Guide

Visa Rules Updated: March 2026 โ€” verify before relying on this information

Croatia's digital nomad visa is unique in offering a genuinely tax-free year โ€” but only if you follow the rules exactly.

Visa Type
Croatia Temporary Stay Permit for Digital Nomads
Income Requirement
โ‚ฌ2,539/month (approx.)
Duration
1 year, non-renewable (can reapply after 6 months)

Tax-free status

Croatia's digital nomad visa is genuinely tax-free โ€” you don't pay Croatian income tax on your foreign-sourced income. This is because the visa explicitly does not grant tax residency in Croatia. You remain a tax resident of your home country.

The catch: home country taxes

Since you're not a Croatian tax resident, you're still fully liable for taxes in your home country. If your home country offers residency-based taxation, you may still owe taxes there even while living in Croatia. The visa doesn't reduce your overall tax burden โ€” it just doesn't add to it.

Duration limitations

The visa is strictly 1 year and cannot be renewed consecutively. After expiry, you must leave and wait 6 months before reapplying. This prevents establishing long-term residency and the tax obligations that come with it.

No Croatian employment

You cannot work for Croatian companies or clients on this visa. All your income must come from foreign sources โ€” employers or clients outside Croatia.

Health insurance requirement

You must have health insurance valid in Croatia for the entire stay. This is a visa requirement, not a tax issue, but the cost is a deductible business expense if you're self-employed.

Tips for Croatia

โœ“

Verify your home country tax obligations don't increase while you're abroad.

โœ“

The visa is truly tax-free in Croatia โ€” don't register for Croatian taxes.

โœ“

Plan ahead for the 6-month gap between visa periods.

โœ“

Keep proof that all income is from non-Croatian sources.

โœ“

Consider Croatia as a one-year tax optimization play while maintaining home country compliance.
