Tax residency rules

Colombia considers you a tax resident if you spend 183+ days in the country during a calendar year. As a tax resident, you're taxed on worldwide income at progressive rates up to 39%. The digital nomad visa does not exempt you from this.

Regimen Simple

Colombia's Régimen Simple de Tributación consolidates income tax, industry tax, and consumption tax into one simplified return with rates from 1.8% to 11.6% depending on revenue and activity. This can be dramatically cheaper than the standard regime for qualifying freelancers.

First-year planning

If you arrive mid-year, you may not hit 183 days and can avoid Colombian tax residency for that first year. Plan your arrival date strategically.

Foreign income treatment

Colombian tax residents are taxed on worldwide income, but foreign-source income earned before becoming a resident is generally not taxed. Foreign tax credits are available for taxes paid to other countries.

Banking and payments

Opening a Colombian bank account requires a cedula de extranjeria. Many digital nomads use Wise or Payoneer while waiting for local banking. Exchange rates and transfer fees matter — track them for deductions.

Tips for Colombia

Time your arrival to optimize first-year tax residency status.

Explore Régimen Simple — rates as low as 1.8% are hard to beat.

Get your cédula de extranjería as soon as your visa is approved.

Use a Colombian contador — they're affordable and essential for DIAN (tax authority) compliance.

Keep records of all foreign income and foreign tax paid for credit claims.
