Tax residency trigger
Brazil considers you a tax resident after 183 days in a 12-month period, or immediately if you have a permanent visa. As a tax resident, progressive rates from 7.5% to 27.5% apply to worldwide income. The digital nomad visa is temporary, which may delay residency status.
Carnê-Leão monthly reporting
Foreign-source income must be reported monthly through the Carnê-Leão system. This is a mandatory monthly declaration and payment — not annual. Many digital nomads are caught off guard by this requirement.

MEI and Simples Nacional
Brazil's MEI (Microempreendedor Individual) regime allows very small businesses to pay a fixed monthly amount (~R$70) covering tax and social security, with annual revenue up to R$81,000. Above that, Simples Nacional offers simplified rates. These can dramatically reduce your effective tax rate.
CPF requirement
You need a CPF (Cadastro de Pessoa Física) for virtually everything in Brazil — banking, renting, and tax filing. Get it through the Federal Revenue Service or Brazilian consulate.
Exchange control
Brazil has exchange control regulations. Large transfers in or out of the country must be reported. Currency conversion through official channels is required for amounts above certain thresholds.
